This roundup is brought to you weekly by a group of interns, creative minds, artists and investors who believe that through best in class investing along with the democratization of financial education we can do great things together. Enjoy, Explore and Share.

SAY GOODBYE TO FAANG

Following a month of increasing controversy over a whistleblower’s leaked information and their Q3 2021 earnings release, Facebook announced during Facebook Connect 2021 that it is rebranding to Meta Platforms, Inc. The name change took effect on October 28, 2021 along with a new logo, and FB stock will also undergo a ticker change to MVRS effective on December 1, 2021. Investors will have to say goodbye to the acronym “FAANG”, and Meta’s decade-long vision for building the metaverse — the envisioned successor to the mobile internet — will greatly change the trajectory of the former social media company.

TESLA CROSSES $1T

On Monday, Hertz Co. announced that they would be purchasing 100,000 vehicles from Tesla, Inc. to provide a premium and differentiated rental experience. Details on the timeline of a rollout (no pun intended) to consumers is still blurry, but we do know that this purchase order is 20% of Tesla's total vehicle shipment in 2020 which means it is a big deal for both companies. On the day of the announcement, Elon Musk's flagship company crossed the $1 trillion market capitalization threshold joining the likes of Apple, Microsoft, Saudi Aramco, Alphabet and Amazon. Tesla is also now more valuable than Facebook, Berkshire Hathaway and Tencent.

share how to round out your

HALLOWEEN PORTFOLIO

with their stock pick costumes.

If I were to dress up as one of the stocks I’m researching, I would dress up as a gold prospector to represent Royal Gold. Although they don’t mine for gold themselves (they own stream and royalty interests in companies that do) and people no longer mine for gold using a pick ax (to my knowledge), I think this would be the most fun company to dress up for. One particular source of inspiration was a skit from SNL where Will Ferrell played the role of a gold prospector.

There are a few options to approach a costume that represents Lululemon. First, their shopping bags are a trademark of the brand, so dressing up as the bag itself is a creative option. Another approach is to dress up as a lemon with “Lulu”  written on a piece of paper and glued to the front. The last option, and arguably the simplest, would be to wear Lululemon clothing and dress as a yoga enthusiast! Lululemon took off in the yoga community and this propelled the company to become what it is today.

If I were to dress up as one of the stocks I’m researching, I would dress up as a combination of a bumble bee and Cupid. Bumble is a fast growing app that specializes in helping people make connections. The company is most well known for its dating services, but it is also branching into helping people make friends and expanding their professional network, through Bumble BFF and Bumble Bizz, respectively.

Disney is always a classic, with the opportunity to dress up as one of your favorite childhood characters. Mickey Mouse is a legend, and there are sure to be complete costumes at your nearest Halloween store. If you wanted to go the homemade route, a  black onesie or shirt, black pants, red shorts, white gloves, yellow shoes, and of course, Mickey Ears!

Since Best Buy is a retailer, they offer very few of their own products and it would be hard to dress up as an electronic device. If I had to get creative, I would dress up as a Geek Squad employee. It’s a very simple but also very recognizable outfit that I could pull off pretty easily!

Dressing up like Snap Inc. for halloween is as easy as it gets because you end up with one of the most classic halloween costumes — the bedsheet ghost. For extra points, you could wear a camera around your neck, carry around a map, or put on a pair of spectacles — some defining features of Snapchat’s platform. If you do pursue this costume idea, make sure to snap a short video of it on Snapchat and upload it to Spotlight to help your creation go viral.

When I first heard about NFTs at the beginning of 2021, I quickly dismissed them as worthless jpegs. I figured that anyone can save the picture if they wanted, so “owning” it should not add any particular value. I couldn’t fathom the idea that people were buying some NFTs for millions of dollars. As WallStreetBets, the infamous social media investing brand, started to post about them, I quickly attributed this trend to the same hype that fueled the meme-stock craze. Similar to other pop-culture trends in history, I assumed this was just another fad that would never last. It wasn’t until September, when a friend who was interested in NFTs, convinced me to try and buy one with him. Going through the actual process of trying to buy an NFT, and deciphering what makes some more valuable than others, I began to realize the potential utility and value that goes beyond the actual picture it displays.

What is an NFT?

A non-fungible token (NFT) is defined as a special kind of crypto asset in which each token is unique, distinguishable and one-of-a-kind — as opposed to “fungible” assets like Bitcoin and dollar bills, which are all worth exactly the same amount. Because every NFT is unique and stored on the blockchain, they can be used to authenticate ownership of digital assets like artworks, recordings, and virtual real estate or pets.

Crypto Profile: Released in 2015, Ethereum is a decentralized computing platform that uses ETH (also called Ether) to pay transaction fees (or “gas”). Developers can use Ethereum to run decentralized applications (dApps) and issue new crypto assets, known as Ethereum tokens. Ethereum-based apps are built using “smart contracts.” Smart contracts, like regular paper contracts, establish the terms of an arrangement between parties. But unlike an old-fashioned contract, smart contracts automatically execute when the terms are met without the need for either participating party to know who is on the other side of the deal — and without the need for any kind of intermediary. Ethereum, like Bitcoin, is an open source project that is not owned or operated by a single individual. Anyone with an internet connection can run an Ethereum node or interact with the network. Popular Ethereum-based innovations include stablecoins (which are pegged to the dollar by smart contract), decentralized finance apps (collectively known as DeFi), and other decentralized apps (or dapps).
